We don’t have television. I’m not a big fan. It only depresses me. But we do watch documentaries online and some news programs, between the CBC and Al Jazeera. I don’t know why people subscribe to cable when they can get everything online that’s worth viewing. Anyway- Friday, movie night for a lot of people so I figured I’d hook you up with two worthwhile films…
“Inside Job” takes a look at the financial crisis and reasons for it, and is quite well done given some of the other crap that’s out there, and “Dirt: The Movie” is just one of my all time favourite documentaries. Really, really recommend Dirt.
JEEZE!!!! If you were worried about Cable depressing you, what did Inside Job end up doing?!?!? I complained for days after seeing it!
I have cable at the moment, only because I don’t have the choice NOT to have it, my condo corp has decided it is an essential service and is part of our condo fees… in 1 year i think i logged 6 viewing hours… including watching most of the Oscars. like you I have moved my entertainment online for the majority of my viewing… the few shows that i do like to watch, are posted online (Daily show, Colbert) legally, so there is no reason to stay up and watch them. The internet is more of an “active” source of entertainment than TV, if i see something cool I can click a link, or check a wiki or find a corresponding blog then go back, wheras tv I just sit and stare.
I’ll have to look into Dirt:the Movie… it seems you may not me an impartial source considering all you do with it!
I liked Inside Job because of the ‘mainstream’ manner in which it was presented- I think it’ll probably hit a larger audience than some of the other films that are out there, and for that reason I found it encouraging. Cable TV on the other hand- that I find depressing because it reminds me how dumbed-down our society is. Catering to the lowest common denominator seems to be the norm, and I worry that the ‘lowest’ is now also the ‘largest’… I love that your condo corp has decided it’s an essential service though- that got the day going with a good laugh!
P.S.- I think Rick Mercer beats John Stewart! Wish his political commentaries were longer though…
Food Inc!
Agreed- Food Inc was a really good film! So were Food Matters, A Farm for the Future, The World According to Monsanto, Patent for a Pig- all on the same site. I also liked No Impact Man but I can’t remember what site I found it on…
Crude Awakening, What A Way To Go (our fav!), Crude Impact. All very awesome.
Watched Inside Job last night, WOW!! Very excellent as well, we love documentaries they seem to be so much more ‘real’ than regular TV. (and yes it made me very angry!)
I tried to cancel our cable and they wouldn’t let me! I spent over 30min on the phone with them telling them how bad the service was, so they gave me a new receiver and knocked $20 off our bill! So we still have it and watch about 1 hour a week! (which includes the news and we have kids!) Maybe I’ll try again in the spring when we won’t even be inside!
Some other good movies that have been recommended to us but haven’t seen yet are Gasland, The Corporation, Network, and Freakonomics. We rent movies from Zip.ca great place with no late fees!
