So I was out adding to my new garden yesterday when it struck me that something seemed different. Nothing immediately obvious but something… A scientist by trade, I find my keen observation skills still come in handy. I paced the property back and forth carefully surveying the scene and occasionally even stopping to listen for clues. Something was not quite right… But what?
And then I looked up at the house behind me. Oh shit. Half the roof is gone. That can’t be good.
Where did it go???
The whole thing flipped over onto itself. Took me a while of searching to figure it out. 🙂
What a coincidence: half a roof hit me on the head the other day.
I don’t suppose there’s any chance you haven’t already chopped it up for firewood?
Yikes! Had a wee bit of a storm eh?
Just a little bit of wind eh? I’m thinking it’s a good thing we decided to go with domes and not even attempt constructing a traditional roof. Now if it would just stop snowing…
Best of luck there, I re-looked at the photo a couple of times, then spotted the upside down roof as well! Hopefully you can finish off the roof and get started on the garden sometime soon.
Here we are waiting to be able to access the property, they close the trail down for the entire month of April so no access, plus the snow and wet puddles under the trees in the bush.
Take care to both of you.
RAD!
I thought my wife and I were the only crazy ones out there!
We are in Central Alberta on Five acres and have spent the last 18 months doing pretty much the same thing! We dropped ourselves onto our property with nothing but a 30 year old 14′ travel trailer. No water, no Power…no nothing!
We got hung up the first summer as we couldn’t get the house started, so in the late fall I built a 400 sq foot “Sort of” post and beam structure around our little trailer, put a 1000 gallon water tank inside, wrapped 3 sides and the roof in bale, tarped it, clad the south face with 16′ of polycarbonite, built a rocket mass heater, and hunkered in for the winter. Passive solar worked like a charm, as did the Rocket stove. Spring came….the house did not get done in time for the next winter….so we hunkered down again and now the house is closed in and “I’m positive” this was our last winter in what we lovingly call the ” Refugee Camp” (we look pretty skidgy from the road and I was surprised the UN didn’t do an AID drop on us!)
I laughed so hard when I saw the snow/new compost bin…I was doing the same thing this winter. for our compost toilet system. Too funny.
My rocket stove worked great and kept us warm…as did the wandering around the woods looking for deadfall. But the stove needs some repairs, but it has been a really good test of systems.
P.S. I just picked up our solar equipment the other day! (we have been functioning off of two panels we salvaged and fixed, so we are looking forward to having enough power to run more than one light at a time!
Drop me an e-mail and I’ll send you a pic of our place.
Very cool! That sounds awesome. I’ll email you- would love to see pictures of your set up! 🙂
