As usual we are hella busy with any number of projects on the go on a given day. Plastering, planning and building the mass heater, bagging, trying to get the roofs on before first snowfall… I’ll have time for more blogging later in the season and fill you all in on the details of the many things we’ve been up to. In the meantime, here is a picture of the one roof we have completed. 🙂
Looks good!
I haven’t visited in an eon, but was very fascinated with this project! Your green tomato cakes looks pretty good too.
I really like the castle idea. And I can see the slight slope of the roof, what pitch did you guys do? I don’t see how it would drain past the earthbags? Are you working in a drain for water catchment somewhere? That would be cool especially if the earthbag parapets helped to catch the water/snow until it melted….

But wordpress is being silly and not letting me sign in.
The roofs are built at a 5% slope with drains on the south side of the building. We tried two different drainage systems- I suspect both will work well. I really should get photos of both but the roofs are slippery with ice right now. The latest post gives a better view from the outside though. We plan on building a wrap-around garden come spring and will use the water captured from the roof for irrigating the garden. We are considering trying yet a third type of drain that would drain to the outside (like the others) but have the option of draining indoors and we might give that a shot on the final addition next year, which’ll be the greenhouse.
How are you guys doing? I haven’t kept up with anyone’s blogs for ages now. I have no idea what’s happening with anyone anymore. Ugh- need more energy. 🙂
We are very interested in building this type of roof on our earth bag house we are building over the summer. I’m hoping you might share some more details on how you built the roof. I see you did the 5% slope for water catchment and that it must obviously support quite a snow load (we live in Maine). How did you water proof and insulate this roof? How big is the building and roof? How did you incorporate the roof into the round house? What did you build the roof out of? I’m so glad I found this site. It has been very helpful so far!
